Cliff Kearns is an experienced artist from Canada whose paintings have been featured in solo exhibitions internationally. With an early background in design and illustration, Kearns began to focus on more personal self expression since 2000. These fine art paintings have evolved from daily reflections and meditations on Life, and our place in it. In the quest to reveal a true self, every series also incorporates numbers.
Cliff moves back and forth between the complex works incorporating sequential numbering and the creation of individual numerals between One and Ten as paintings in their own right. He paints the individual numerals in unique ways, presenting each as Works of Art.
These more conceptual works have grown from twenty five years of creating personal paintings, assemblages and constructions which have been themed around Sequential and Individual Numbering.

Prior to that, he worked for over 30 years as a freelance commissioned artist completing custom projects for International Institutions and Corporations, the likes of General Motors, Canadian General Electric, Proctor & Gamble, TD Canada Trust, 3M Co., and UWO in which he honed his technical skills to an exceptional level.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

This most recent 'i' Personhood Series of Paintings uses words and texture as a principle element in the Work. The primary strength lies in the fusion of text and texture, effortlessly navigating the realms of abstract impressionism and typography. The choice of the wording is profoundly introspective and prompts a metacognitive reflection on identity and being.

The anthropomorphic "I" in the painting celebrates my role, signifying a personal touch in the universal language of art. This central figure could be interpreted as a self-reference, a symbol of the artist's identity, or more broadly, as a representation of man’s creativity. The tactile appearance invites viewers to imagine the sensation of touch, the high relief of certain sections, coupled with the complexity of the color palette engages multiple senses that enrich the experience of the work.

The other words compel the viewer to engage intellectually with the Art and to consider the layers of meaning beyond the aesthetic.
