Corina Ioana

Corina Ioana is a Romanian-American contemporary artist based in California, originally from Transylvania. Working across abstract painting, mixed media, photography, and sculptural surfaces, her practice explores transformation, memory, emotional presence, and material depth.
After leaving Romania in her early twenties as a single mother, she rebuilt her life across Europe and later in the United States while continuously creating through photography, interior design, restoration, and painting. Her work is deeply shaped by resilience, reinvention, and the physical language of layered materials.
Using acrylic, glaze, sand, cement, jute, wood, and reclaimed elements, she creates tactile works that exist between painting and artifact. Her evolving collections investigate erosion, concealment, rupture, and emergence through contemporary abstraction.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My work explores courage, identity, transformation, and the emotional traces carried within materials and surfaces.
Working through abstraction, mixed media, and layered textures, I create pieces that feel weathered, excavated, and deeply human. I am drawn to tension between fragility and permanence — between what is hidden, fractured, preserved, and revealed over time.
My process is intuitive and physical. I build, erode, layer, scrape, and reconstruct surfaces using paint, reclaimed materials, sediment-like textures, and structural elements. Each work becomes part of an evolving visual language centered on memory, presence, and transformation.
Through collections including Strata, Fragments, Vestiges, and Validation is for Parking, I explore abstraction not only as image, but as emotional and material experience.
