Fabio Avella Martinez

Fabio Avella is a Colombian-born contemporary painter whose vibrant, deeply textured canvases reflect a life lived at the intersection of international diplomacy and passionate creative expression. Based in Montreal, Avella came to fine art following a distinguished 30-year career in the Diplomatic and Consular Corps of Colombia, which included serving as the Consul General of Colombia in Montreal from 1997 to 2003. In 2005, holding the rank of Ambassador, he chose to transition away from public politics to dedicate himself fully to his lifelong devotion to the canvas.

Avella describes himself as an expressionist-figurative painter. His work is a celebration of movement, energy, and a generous application of bold, tropical tones. He draws rich inspiration from the foundational masters of Colombian art—such as Alejandro Obregón, Enrique Grau, Carlos Jacanamijoy, Ana Mercedes Hoyos, and Juan Antonio Roda—while maintaining a deep reverence for European avant-garde pioneers like Cézanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh.

Characterized by an intuitive and fiercely independent creative philosophy, Avella rejects rigid academic structures in favor of authentic reinvention. Working directly on the canvas without preconceived rules, he builds his pieces through a meticulous process of multi-layered painting. This tactile, physical relationship with the medium allows him to refine subtle, complex textures while ensuring that color remains an active, felt presence across every inch of the organization of the canvas. For Avella, color is not merely an element of the work—it is the very essence of painting itself.

Driven by the belief that art elevates and gives meaning to the human experience, Avella’s striking, high-energy artwork brings a sophisticated, globally-minded, and luminous energy to modern spaces. His selection by HelloArt marks an exciting chapter in sharing his vivid tropical palettes and rich textured narratives with corporate, public, and commercial real estate audiences.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

For me, being an artist is an ongoing, lifelong evolutionary process. It requires a delicate balance between two fundamental actions: actively questioning everything that has been achieved in art up to this moment, while simultaneously allowing myself to be profoundly inspired by it. Rather than viewing the history of art as a rigid set of rules to follow, I see it as an open invitation. By learning from the significant contributions of those who preceded us, I seek to build a "Zone of Cooperation"—a timeless, living dialogue that connects my work with classical, modern, and contemporary creators.

This collaborative space extends far beyond the boundaries of the canvas. I draw immense creative energy from new trends, abstract forms, and creators across all disciplines—including master composers like Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. I am deeply moved by any artist who has dared to imagine the unimaginable. Collectively, they have laid the foundations that challenge us to become better human beings. To make art is to listen to one another, to learn from one another, and to engage in a positive, constructive questioning of our world.

Ultimately, painting—much like poetry, literature, architecture, dance, and music—is the pursuit of harmony to evoke a visceral emotion. In my practice, I orchestrate the elemental qualities of the medium: the color, value, shape, space, scale, and texture. These are the fundamental components that make up a piece of art, and it is through their careful, passionate combination that a painting truly comes to life. Art, like any profound human endeavor, must be constantly cultivated, and it is this continuous cultivation that drives my devotion to the canvas.
