Helen Alex is a Vancouver-based abstract painter working from Pandora’s Box Studios in the city’s East Village. Her practice draws on the contrasts between coastal surroundings and urban life, exploring stillness, movement and changing light.

Working with resin, foil, mother of pearl and pigment, she creates layered paintings whose surfaces shift with the light. Colour, texture and reflective materials are central to her work, with each painting developing from an initial mood or palette into an abstract composition.

Helen Alex Murray paints between the beauty of the West Coast and the urgency of the city, between stillness and movement, between what we show and what we carry. Her work begins with a feeling, finds its palette, and unfolds through layers of intention and surrender. Working with resin, foil, wood and pearl, she creates surfaces that catch and shift the light.
