Helena Palazzi

Helena Palazzi is a Swedish Italian American artist based in Kingston, New York. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Pietro Vannucci in Perugia, Italy, before moving to New York City, where she worked as a photographer for more than twenty years. After relocating to the Hudson Valley, she returned to painting and developed a practice shaped by her experience with photography, material exploration, and the contrasting visual languages of her Swedish and Italian heritage. Her work has been exhibited throughout New York and the Hudson Valley.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My work explores the tension between visibility and withholding, restraint and expression. I build each painting through layers of paint, ink, graphite, and other materials, allowing marks to emerge, disappear, and return. Through addition, erasure, and reduction, I look for the point at which an image feels present without being fully revealed. The finished paintings hold traces of what came before, creating spaces that feel quiet, atmospheric, and emotionally charged.
