Ibeabuchi Ananaba

Ibe Ananaba is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice explores contemporary Afro-sociocultural consciousness through figuration, experimental drawing, and painting. ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My multidisciplinary visual practice explores contemporary sociocultural consciousness, from an Afro-diasporic lens, through figuration, experimental drawing, and painting. Using the human figure as a central visual language, I investigate themes of identity, memory, movement, and cultural presence across Afro-diasporic experiences.

Drawing from the vibrant urban cultures that shaped my lived experiences in Aba, Enugu, Lagos, and later within the diaspora, my work reflects on how contemporary Afro-urban expression—particularly through music, fashion, and everyday life—negotiates visibility, authorship, and identity within global culture.

Grounded in research-based studio experimentation and material exploration, I embrace both traditional and unconventional processes to create layered works that balance contemplation, emotional resonance, and cultural storytelling. Through this approach, I aim to contribute to ongoing conversations around Afro identity, cultural continuity, and the evolving realities of contemporary Black life.

My work has been shared through public talks, publications, and local and international exhibitions.
