Mes-Low, a third-generation artist, was born in the Netherlands. Starting in 1985, she learned from various artists during a three-year apprenticeship in her home country. In 1991, she moved permanently to the West Coast of Canada. There, she took continuing education courses at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, BC.

Her paintings are part of private collections in Europe, Canada, the UK, the US, and South America. As a member of the Canadian Federation of Artists, Mes-Low teaches Painting Technique Workshops. She now lives and works in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Mes Low’s art is a dialogue on canvas, mixing images from the world around her with her imagination. Dealing with PTSD from a young age, she finds peace in painting landscapes without people, where glimpses of beauty bring her joy. Her work is a place of rest, calm, and safety.

In her landscapes, Mes Low simplifies forms with childlike wonder, highlighting nature’s beauty and creating ideal, utopian scenes. Her trees have human-like qualities and stand against the backdrop of dawn, capturing quiet, serene moments.

Her unique style comes from layering thin oil paint, with each layer adding to her signature look. The landscapes she paints reflect what we long for but rarely find.

She is inspired by artists like Dali, Hopper, Woods, and modern artists such as Michiel Schrijver, Ross Penhall, and Dana Irving
