I (Jeff Walker) am a self-taught, contemporary, Toronto-based artist, working in acrylic paints.
Recently I was awarded the People's Choice Award at the 2022 Riverdale Art Walk and have exhibited all over Toronto, Collingwood and Ottawa.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My work is inspired by cartoon and comic book art of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Everything I paint grows from an original sketch. All sketches begin with the eyes and that remains a primary element in all my paintings; sometimes the only element in my more minimal works.
I then expand on the original piece by magnifying, cropping, and/or adding layers of abstracted forms from the original drawing to create a final piece. I want to create art with a simple, yet bold, colour palette with strong clean outlines to add dimension and depth. My goal is to create art that stands out and grabs your attention; something that is an elevated version of the original medium but still holds on to the feeling that inspired it.
