Karen Marki

Karen is an abstract expressionist artist working primarily in acrylics on canvas. Self-taught, her years in the social justice and sustainability fields have helped inform her craft as a painter. She is an Exhibiting Member Status by the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) since 2019 after her work was reviewed by a jury of fellow artists under a competitive national process.

She has her studio at the Eastside Atelier building at 1310 Williams Street, Vancouver BC where they host annual exhibitions and participate in the Eastside Culture Crawl, one of the largest art festivals in North America. Her art has been in numerous local and international exhibitions and can be seen in the homes and offices of collectors in Canada and abroad.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Using quick and layered brushstrokes, I try to capture the lights, sounds, colours and energy of my surroundings where natural beauty and urban grit coexist. My process includes using unusual tools to create markings and textures inspired by my walks through the gardens, beaches and lanes of the city. Like an excavation site, each of my works are layers of several paintings built onto the canvas encouraging the viewer to see what lies beneath.
