Maggie Devereux
Maggie Devereux is a long standing and award-winning documentary style photographer and has been practicing her form of storytelling for over two decades in Canada. What began as family-focused portraiture quickly morphed into something completely different and unique, catching the eye of hundreds of families across the country who wanted to really 'be seen' for what they were and not just how they appeared.
Maggie's keen sense of spontaneity coupled with a genuine and very rare lens into the human experience produced images that were not only treasured by their subjects, but rapidly became recognized by the governing bodies of the art form for where she went on to win Documentary Family Awards, This is Reportage’s Top 100 Photographers in the World, and A Click Voice Competition Award in rapid succession.
While the story of the family was and will always be of great interest to her and remain close to her heart, she went on to diversify her work. Maggie began to further explore her passion and began to capture images that directly reflected her love of light and shadow, rural Canadiana, simple nostalgia, brutal architecture and nature in its purest form. In response to growing demand for her images in print form, Maggie launched a Print Shop in January 2023, which is a culmination of her work as an artist to date and includes a selection of her most cherished images that she has taken. Maggie is delighted to now be
sharing her work in peoples' homes and spaces.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
For me, the subject is life, the human experience and how we experience our lives. Life can be messy and chaotic and I see beauty in the breakdown, the challenges, the heartbreak and the tough times. The bad is just as much a part of our lives as the good and I like to recognize both extremes, and everything in between with equal importance. I capture the moments in a life that tell the tale of the person and people who lived it. I capture moments that make people feel seen.
