Maja Maglajlic

Maja is a Vancouver BC based abstract artist with a degree in Art History from the University of British Columbia. Weather working in acrylic, oil pastel or alcohol ink, her art is highly informed by the use of bold, saturated colour, and is rooted in experimentation. Her pieces often feature gestural expressive paint applications using both brushes and palette knives, or, in the case of alcohol inks, expressive pouring technique. The colour, though, is the thread that unifies her many modes of expression and adds layered meanings to her work. Though a lifelong creator, she started sharing her work with a wider public in 2018, exhibiting locally and participating in Clio Art Fair in New York City (Oct. 2018) and ITSLIQUID Group's Venice Art Fair (Spring 2019). More recently, she has shown with HelloArt Vancouver (Spring 2024), participated in the Gallery Goerge's group exhibition: Spring Equinox (March 2024) and three editions of Art in the City art fair, all in Vancouver.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My art is a spiritual, meditative exercise and a way to explore and deal with a myriad emotions. It is highly intuitive. Influenced by my Mediterranean upbringing, the rich, bright colours reflect and bring forth the light out of the darkness that often surrounds our day to day existence. Finding joy isn't always easy, but bringing even a little of it into the world, can make a world of difference.
