Mia Delorès

My name is Mia Delorés, a Washington, D.C.-based contemporary painter whose work explores memory, identity, family, and the meaning of home. Through portraiture and abstraction, I use color, texture, and storytelling to preserve moments that might otherwise be forgotten—drawing inspiration from my Dominican heritage, my upbringing in Miami, and the people and experiences that have shaped me.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My work is rooted in memory, identity, and the quiet moments that shape our understanding of home. As a Washington, D.C.-based artist of Dominican descent, I am deeply interested in the stories we inherit, the histories we carry, and the emotional connections that bind us to family, culture, and place.

Through portraiture and abstraction, I create paintings that explore nostalgia, belonging, love, grief, and resilience. I often draw inspiration from personal photographs, family memories, and cultural traditions, using color and texture to transform intimate experiences into visual narratives. My practice is an act of preservation—a way of honoring people, moments, and histories that might otherwise fade with time.

My ongoing body of work, The Color of Home, examines the complexities of ancestry, migration, and generational memory. Through this series, I explore how home exists not only as a physical place but also as an emotional landscape carried within us. Whether through a familiar gesture, a cherished object, or a shared family story, these fragments of memory become vessels for connection and reflection.
