ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The focus for my art is to create work that evokes light, depth, and energy using juxtapositions of color and contrast. I have an emotional feeling about color that becomes a physical sensation I process into the art I create. I seek to achieve luminosity by blending colors and placing them in contrasting ways to create illusions of light and buoyancy. My goal is to evoke a strong emotional response to the color and the light in the same way that these affect me.
My work is intuitive and visceral – it is organic, but sometimes with geometric references as well. Nature is always at the back of mind when I paint, regardless of how bright or unnatural in color a painting may seem. From grand vistas to granular observation, my sense of shape and form finds inspiration in clouds, water, plant life, and wildlife. Light informs color and I try to grasp those nuances in my work.

Acrylic and oil on canvas.

36x36x1.50"

A bright a happy painting layering oil over acrylic...a statement about tuning down the distractions, noise, and cacophony we experience everyday in an urban environment or a digital one that disturbs us with excessive shifting and projects. This hopeful view of finding a way to keep the focus reminds us that we have the power to keep our lives on track.

Acrylic and sand on canvas.

30x24x1.50"

Starry night? Ocean reflections? Poolside fairy lights? You decide! Sparkle is a little bit of all three with a deeply textured surface and layers of transparent color on a bed of sand. I was intrigued with the qualities of sand for texture and I was so pleased with the result. The shimmer of areas of iridescent reflect beautifully against the pebbly texture.

Acrylic, tar gel, and pastel on watercolor paper (framed).

19.25x19.25x1"

From the Dancing with Color series - this summer inspired piece has the juiciness of blueberries and a splash of hot color in the mix - blueberry martinis by the pool anyone? This piece was an off-shoot of my piece "Mango Tango" that I turned into a series. "Blueberry Bebop" started with deep intense blue and making that dance with other colors. I love the gel medium I used that made some of colors turn transparent.

From the Dancing with Color series, this piece pops with vibrating color and light This was an experiment with layering acrylic on paper and using a gel medium to add texture. I was so happy with the result that I came up with this name, and made three more! Hence the dancing series :)

Acrylic, iridescent acrylic on canvas.

31x31x1.25"

This piece was inspired by late afternoon waves ...I was mesmerized by the shifting blues, greens, lavenders, and pinks as the waves rolled and crashed. The amount of layers, all of the texture, the iridescent paint and the soft glow of the setting sun all combine to give this painting depth and the feel of motion.

Acrylic on yupo paper (framed).

28.60x34.60x1"

Inspired by the beautiful blues, teals, yellows, and oranges of the Kingfisher plumage, you feel the energy and freedom of flight. The extraordinary colorings of birds is again a part of the natural world that I'm drawn to. I think my start with admiring birds began when my mother pointed out her favorite bird, the cardinal, when I was really young.

Scrumptious lime, bringing to mind Margaritas and Key Lime Pie, gives a midcentury modern feel to any space. Small enough to adapt to a variety of locations and big enough for a powerful jolt of color, this piece makes a big impact.
