South Surrey resident Patricia Sandberg creates colourful and rhythmic interpretations of nature in her abstract acrylic paintings. Her mission is to celebrate and protect our natural world.
While painting during a 1990s hiatus in her career as a securities lawyer, her work was juried into several exhibitions. Since returning to art in 2021, Patricia’s abstracts have been selected for a solo show at Hycroft Gallery, three-person exhibition at Michael Wright Art Gallery, multiple group exhibitions in Greater Vancouver including at The Gallery George and the Federation Gallery. Her work has also been recognized in international and local competitions.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I create large expressive abstract paintings in my studio south of Vancouver, close to the Salish Sea. In my work, I reinterpret the colours, rhythms, and organic forms of wildlife gardens I have created, ocean waters I have sailed, and the rugged territory of northern Canada.
Using free-flowing brushstrokes, multiple layers, a wide-ranging palette, and distinctive mark-making, I seek to portray the feeling of being in nature. I allow each painting to reveal itself gradually, as an unfolding conversation between curiosity, discovery, and paint.
I hope my work offers viewers a renewed sense of connection with the living world that sustains us, and a deeper recognition of its value.
