ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Postmodern art has a fixation on absolute contrasts; photography and painting, abstract and representation, and conceptual and practical. My study is a dismantling of these conventional categories through the integration of elements found within sculpture, painting, and photography.

The sculpted canvases are handmade and unique to each artwork. The structural forms fragment the frame and instill movement, disrupting the conventional geometric configuration of wall-mounted artwork.

Each piece is a deconstruction of the surrounding environment, as the structural form of the canvas abstracts the natural lines within. My investigation into the tradition of Canadian art, the unadulterated beauty of the physical world, and resonating passing memory, results in an attempt to communicate the grandeur and fragility of nature.

I painted this artwork on the campsite while camping at Sandbanks in 2014. The painting includes the grasses from the location and it depicts the impression of the fire reflecting from the plants and grasses. We sat around the campfire at night and enjoyed some refreshments while taking in the beautiful stars in the night sky.

While camping at Sandbanks, I was seated by the campfire when I noticed the full moon peeping in between a seeder tree and a spruce. I quickly grabbed my camera and took several shots of it. The following day, I started painting an impression of that moment. Finally, back in my studio, I combined the photograph and the painted panels into one cohesive artwork.

Mixed Media: Acrylic, photography, and found material on Shaped Canvas. This is a combination of a painting created while camping at Sandbanks and a photograph taken at the same time, which were then combined to create a single, cohesive piece. This process was challenging since I painted before seeing and printing the photo, relying on my impression of the moment. Additionally, combining two different types of canvas was necessary to create a unified work.

My "Rapids" collection is complete with the addition of "Rush," which depicts the full extent of the rapids. This long and narrow piece is made up of three sections, providing versatility in hanging. It can be displayed on the wall as one 147-inch piece, or it can be placed in a corner of a room, utilizing one of the two separations to create a bend.

The sculpted canvas is handmade and unique to this artwork. It features photography printed using Epson archival inks onto the sculpted canvas, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece.
