Robert LeMoal

Robert Charles is a Vancouver-based photographer whose practice, A Life in the Day, explores life through light, movement and atmosphere. He studied at Vancouver’s Focal Point Visual Arts Learning Centre in 2001, receiving a diploma in basic film photography and training in traditional black-and-white darkroom techniques.
His photographs have a moody, romantic quality, combining off-camera lighting with darker backgrounds to create intimate compositions. His artist profile emphasizes an interest in movement, shadow and varied processing techniques, with an experimental approach that allows each image to develop its own character. His portfolio includes the project Being Human.
Charles’s projects also connect photography with community and artistic preservation. From 2013 to 2019, he worked on photographing and documenting a collection of more than 2,000 paintings by Kenyan architect George Vamos, supporting an online catalogue and efforts toward an exhibition. His Sessions with Seniors project involved black-and-white portrait photography, while his exhibition history includes the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver and presentations titled Windows and Another World.
