S. Philips

I am a self-taught abstract artist who works primarily with colored pencils on paper. My artistic journey began with realism, where I enjoyed capturing details, form, light, and shadow. However, after experiencing a creative block, I began exploring abstraction as a way to reconnect with my creativity. What started as an unexpected change in direction became an important part of my artistic identity. Today, I create abstract works that explore emotions, inner experiences, and the beauty of expressing what cannot always be put into words.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My journey into abstraction began during a period when I felt disconnected from my creativity. After creating realism for a long time, I found myself struggling to create and questioning my ability as an artist.
Rather than giving up, I allowed myself to create differently.
I began using colored pencils to explore layers, shapes, textures, and color without always knowing what the finished piece would become. Abstraction gave me the freedom to create from emotion rather than simply from observation.
My work explores the emotions that often exist beneath the surface—uncertainty, vulnerability, hope, healing, and the quiet moments of becoming. I want my artwork to leave space for each viewer to find their own meaning within it.
For me, abstraction became more than a change in artistic style. It became a reminder that sometimes losing your creative direction can lead you toward a new way of seeing yourself.
My hope is that each piece creates an emotional connection with the person who encounters it and becomes something they can continue to discover long after they first see it.
