Selen Kaplan
Hello, my name is Selen Kaplan. I was born in Turkey. I began my fine arts education in high school and later pursued a degree in ceramic design at university in Turkey. I designed paintings on ceramic surfaces. Since 2020, I have started a new life with my family in Ottawa.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
All my life, I have been comforting myself by drawing. It was not easy to come to Canada and start a new life during the pandemic, which made life feel like a labyrinth to me. This challenge opened a new path towards my passion. Even though I didn’t have the space to make ceramics, I discovered tiny wheels on social media. A corner of my house later turned into a small workshop. My first exhibition in Canada was at the Ottawa Miniature Galleries in February 2024, where I showcased a tiny vase. Now, ceramics have come to life in my mind as miniatures. I am fascinated by the magical world of miniatures and happy to have found my way in this little world. I now make tiny ceramic vases that decorate the walls of my house, and I am excited to share them with Helloart.
