ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Sophia Kyungwon Kim is a Toronto-based visual artist and mother of four, is currently pursuing an MFA at OCAD University, building on her foundation of a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the same institution. Sophia's art revolves around relationships and processes, shaped by feminist and mutualistic ideas, drawing inspiration from her life experiences, including her former role as a police officer in Korea and her journey as an immigrant mother of four. She passionately celebrates nature's essence and advocates for its care in the world. Inspired by the organic lines of the natural world, Sophia utilizes oil and acrylic to create art that captures often-overlooked entities, placing a particular emphasis on mushrooms. In a world characterized by constant change, her objective is to reveal subtle stories within nature, encouraging viewers to uncover the hidden beauty that surrounds us. Sophia's exploration and artistic practice invite people to immerse themselves in the intricate wonders of the natural world and to appreciate its profound narrative.

As a middle-aged woman raising your child, I contemplate the balance between my life as a human being and my roles as a mother and wife. These series abstractly represent the struggle in my daily life, where there is a constant endeavour toward self-realization as an artist even amidst the labour of caregiving and maintenance.
