ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Sophia Kyungwon Kim is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice materializes the invisible labor of domestic and parental care. Drawing from a twenty-two-year career in law enforcement and the lived experience of raising four children, her work reconfigures care as a vital social infrastructure interwoven with intense physical labor and complex emotions.

Moving between oil painting, textile installation, and bronze sculpture, Kim explores the deep interdependence of human relationships, embracing both the vulnerability and the profound resilience required to sustain others. Her recent practice focuses on translating soft, embodied acts of care into permanent structural weight, granting endurance to ephemeral gestures. By shifting these responsive forms into bronze, she makes visible the quiet yet essential forces that hold our communities and ecological environments together. Kim holds both a BFA and an MFA from OCAD University, and her work continues to investigate how art can reveal the unseen systems that sustain everyday life.
