ARTIST’S STATEMENT
ARTIST STATEMENT
As an abstract painter, I’m passionate about creating visual experiences where strong linear elements and shapes come together within intense color fields. These lines and shapes create a visual language that reads as something unique to each viewer, transforming the resulting abstract compositions into sites of private thought.
My approach to painting combines intuitive gestures and deliberate mark-making. At first, using colour without restraint, I fill the entire surface of the canvas in a very instinctive and dynamic manner. I like to break the whiteness of the canvas and aim at discovering the painting through the act of painting itself, and that is for me a liberating source of inspiration.
In a second stage, I explore the pictorial information, then identify areas I want to retain, emphasize or modify. I'm not afraid to change the image. The space is pushed and pulled through the layering of paint, revealing in places the rich history of previous layers. At this point, I shift my attention to how the elements relate to each other to create a composition that makes me feel a sense of balance.
My work draws on the parallel between composition within the canvas and balance in one's life – a concept I consider to be the driving force in my art.
