Sue Brown

Sue Brown is a fine art photographer whose work emerges from a lifetime spent in the company of horses and wild things. A lifelong artist and horsewoman raised in Texas, she competed at the national level in reining and western pleasure, winning multiple U.S. and Canadian championships — a foundation of lived experience that informs every image she makes.

Her work spans three distinct bodies — gritty western imagery inspired by the painterly traditions of Russell and Remington, elegant studies of heritage breeds like Arabians and Andalusians, and evocative wildlife photography. All three are marked by a signature quality: images so richly textured and emotionally alive that viewers consistently ask whether they are looking at a photograph or a painting.

Sue regularly competes in national and international photography competitions and continues to develop her craft through advanced educational opportunities and rigorous critique. She photographs throughout North America and Europe and is based in Minnesota.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

"I was raised by horses.

I learned to live inside the outside — to read the signals others seldom see, to feel the shift before it happens, to speak the language of wild things.

My camera is simply how I share the lessons of my life."

Sue Brown's journey as an artist began in the first grade, when a drawing of two frogs on a lily pad earned her a blue ribbon and sparked a lifelong love of art. That passion was matched only by her devotion to horses — growing up sketching and painting them, showing her family's horses, and assisting her mother, a professional equine photographer.

A Hawaiian native raised in Texas and now based in Minnesota, Sue built a successful career in advertising and marketing while winning multiple national championships in reining and western pleasure. But it was a trip to Alaska — viewing arresting wildlife through a camera lens — that led her to put aside her paints and pencils and embrace photography.

Sue is known for creating images that prompt viewers to ask, "Is that a painting?" Richly textured, emotionally resonant and visually immersive, her work explores the tension between grit and grace, realism and reverence, movement and stillness. Her goal is to speak authentically to horsemen through shared experience, while creating joyful connection to horses for those who've never ridden.

On road trips, Sue is joined by her Australian Shepherd, an enthusiastic co-pilot who is still trying to master the GPS.
