Sue Ennis is an artist whose works have been featured in many juried solo and group shows throughout Ontario and the USA. Her energetic paintings stem from her love of colour and texture, and she paints in a variety of media. Her recent works have focussed on peaceful places and abstract florals as a counterpoint to the recent pandemic, and those paintings became part of her Gratitude Project, in which she sent out many small oil paintings to frontline workers nominated by friends or family as a sign of thanks and respect for them continuing to show up and serve others during this difficult time.
Sue is an elected member of the Ontario Society of Artiststs and of the North Toronto Group of Artists.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Colour is always the first decision I make when I start a painting, and my style is abstraction, loosely based on nature. I do not paint from photos or en plein air, but from my memories of places visited or the feeling evoked by them. I start with a palette of 3-4 colours and then start applying them to the canvas and observe carefully what comes up for me as I paint, watching for shapes to emerge, ideas to percolate, and intuition to guide my hand. After some time, I find myself immersed in a state of flow, where I have become unaware of what is going on around me, and all distractions and sense of time floats away.

Road Trip is based on a desire to be in the landscape
experiencing the colours of the surroundings. On a road trip, the colours and shapes seem to flit by and individual details are sometimes blurred with the speed of travel.
