Susan G Abbott is a contemporary artist working in acrylics, mixed media and printmaking, living and working in Toronto.
Abbott’s art education was acquired over many years through private study, workshops, and intensive studio training. She has shown successfully in solo, group and juried exhibitions. She served as President of the Don Valley Art Club from 2018-19.
Work is held by Toronto Public Library Special Collections, City of Toronto, St.John’s Anglican Church Ottawa, and corporate and private collections in Canada, USA, and Europe.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My work is inspired by a joie de vivre and guided by an interest in getting to the essences of things. I feel a connection between all things in nature, of which we are also a part.
Works are built up in layers, focusing always on the importance of the color and value relationships, to create a finished piece that captures a visual idea involving rhythm, repetition of shapes, and the creation of visual space.
I bear witness to climate change by incorporating the most recent atmospheric carbon dioxide number in the finished painting. These may be hard to see, just as the threat is not visible in our daily lives. I hope to see that number trend down one day, as evidence of our collective action.

Blues and de-saturated oranges combine in almost geometrical masses to form a flattened space that is suggestive of a landscape. The diagonals of the lower canvas are offset by curved shapes in the top. Planes of complementary colour are modulated with textures and layers to create visual interest up close. A few shapes threaten to bleed into others.
The overall effect is a piece that is dynamic and calm at the same time, leading the eye around the canvas.
Small text is stamped in the lower left, capturing the date and CO2 number: Mar 2024 423.92 - a way the artist bears witness to continuing climate change.

An image suggestive of landscape built up in multiple layers with acrylic paints and artist printed papers, then obscured. Text elements -- printed directly on the canvas using artist-carved linoleum blocks -- are CO2 numbers for selected months from 1983 to 2024.
The finished work draws the viewer in gradually, drawing the eye to different elements of the work, appreciating the graphical elements as a visual dimension of the work, rather than a message. The work bears witness to climate change by capturing CO2 data trends over time in a context of beauty and joy, a dynamic expression of concern with hopefulness.
