Syd Martinez-Khan is a Montreal-based artist. They create art as a form of journaling, processing their emotions and personal experiences through acrylic on canvas. Themes of growth and healing are prominent in their art, and surrealist elements are incorporated to gain a deeper understanding of the self without the limitations of reality. Syd has been featured in exhibitions centering BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ artists and has recently won the Vizzybility Project Grant for LGBTQ+ artists. Sydney’s work reminds us of our shared human experience, and she hopes that their art can be a source of healing and connection for all.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I am a painter that creates art as a form of journaling, typically through acrylic on canvas. Bright colours allow me to create bold, bright pieces to evoke strong emotions in my viewers. I incorporate surrealist elements in my work to gain a deeper understanding of the self without the limitations of reality. This, in turn, allows me to tap into and better connect with my raw emotions. Aspects of nature and space are often incorporated in my art, as I find these subjects representative of growth, healing, and limitlessness – common themes in my work. I aim to provide viewers the space to explore and connect with their emotions, and remind them that experiencing a full range of emotions, including those considered “negative” emotions, are all part of the human experience. With this, I aim to create art that can be a source of healing and connection for all.

I created this painting as a reflection of my mental space after constantly seeing trauma and violence against Black, Indigenous, and other marginalized peoples be televised and turned into “trendy” conversation topics - with no real action being taken. It depicts a brain emotionally numbing itself as a coping mechanism.

This painting reflects my gratitude for my support system. It is a reminder that our support systems are there to help us in our times of need - not only to comfort us, but to give us a boost so that we have the courage and strength to help ourselves. This is the third painting in the series "Supported".
