Paper cut, collage and ink on cardboard (matted and framed).
13x17"
This collection of figurative artworks created by cutting paper and collage techniques on high weight cardboard.
I was born, grow up and start my artistic journey in Iran. My style draws upon elements of traditional Persian painting (Persian Miniatures), the “flatness” and unique composition of which are surprisingly contemporary.
After getting my BFA, I studied Graphic Design at TM university in Tehran. Meanwhile I started working as a freelance illustrator. Over the past 10 years I have illustrated more than 30 children’s books in Turkey and Iran and all the time I was trying to tell my story with my special language, picture language. My works have been shown in exhibitions and book fairs in Iran, The Emirates, South Korea and here in Canada.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My art is about telling stories that draw on my experiences as an Iranian artist and illustrator. I recently moved to Toronto from Iran where I felt severe limitations on what I could represent through my artwork without having the same social justice and freedom of speech elements that I was obliged and accustomed to observe. At the same time, I am inspired by traditional methods of depiction like the narrative depictions in Persian miniatures. I want to use these methods and their narrative potential to tell new stories, represent the full range of human diversity and reflect on social justice while celebrating freedom.
My formal training in graphic design and my keen interest in children’s stories has intrigued me with a new language in art; the picture language. My illustrations have been published in more than 30 children books and exhibited in book fairs in Iran, the Emirates, South Korea and in Canada
