Nestor is a modern calligraphy artist from Kiev who’s currently based in Toronto.

His way started back in 2012 with street art and exploration of letterforms. This hobby created a path for the artist into the OCAD University where he studied Graphic Design. Using collected knowledge, his focus shifted from the traditional image of a designer to more of an artistic perspective.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Since 2020, Nestor is a great supporter of the modern Calligraphy movement. His main idea is to absorb the knowledge of different cultures & their alphabets to transform traditional letterforms into more abstract / expressive / interesting shapes. Through this practice, the artist believes to unite those cultures together.

Acrylic paint on paper (framed).

14x17"

New series of paper artworks called Immigrant Diaries, which focuses on a duality of immigrants’ feelings. Being divided between 2 places you seem to have second thoughts of coming and starting a completely new life from scratch. These works touch on this topic.

Background text has a word written in chrome that adds the duality part to the works. Front letters were made with markers & airbrush, and they overlap with the background supporting the idea of mixed feelings.

Photography and acrylic paint on wood panel.

15x15"

A painting on top of already existing photo print made on wood panel.

Initially there was just a photo of Audrey Hepburn which Nestor found in the Value Village. The idea of remake was to focus on actress’s facial features, specifically her eyes, and highlight them with calligraphy around her. The phrase “Windows to another world” refers back to the eyes and means that they are the portal to actress’s soul.

Acrylic and permanent paints on canvas.

30x72"

1 / 2 large-scale rectangular canvas from “Crossroads” series. Inspired by George Orwell’s book “1984” and recent events with COVID-19, this series is dedicated to our possible future. Right now we live in a time where we seem to be both free and under the control of ‘Big Brother’ at the same time. Our next steps will dictate which future we get to live in. Future with freedom and truth (Road 1.0.) or future where thoughtcrime is death (Road 2.0.)?
