Tara Nix also known as "Jinx" in contemporary works is a Toronto-based visual artist who specializes in painting and mixed media. Before attending Sheridan College for the Visual and Creative Arts program she also received her BA from the University of Ottawa in General Arts and Art History. Her diverse, raw, and sensational style challenges the constraints of aesthetics through landscapes, graffiti, mixed media, pop art, and experimentation. Her art is designed to produce a voyeur experience that conveys the atmosphere of the diverging locations and settings she portrays.

Influenced by the functionality of light and color in art she constructs visual spectacles that engage and entertain its viewer. Tara intentionally uses light and color to emphasize high contrast, depth, light sources, and movement.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My most recent landscape series entitled 'Focus' was developed by the influence of bokeh photography. I began painting landscapes in impressionism but aimed to challenge myself by shifting my style towards abstraction. By developing compositions that are based on out of focus points of view and capturing natures ‘color swatches' using bokeh patterns and shades. Using the overlaying circles in bokeh to recreate the softened out of focus points of light. Painting with acrylic open paints and matte medium to disrupt the opacity and saturation while capturing the excitement, and atmosphere of the environments depicted.

The focus series was developed by the influence of bokeh photography. I began painting landscapes in impressionism but aimed to challenge myself by evolving my painting style to move towards abstraction. Developing compositions that are based on out of focus points of view. Capturing natures ‘color swatches' and representing it using bokeh patterns and shades. Rather than using an impasto painting technique to add dimension I used the overlaying circles in bokeh to capturing the softened out of focus points of light. Painting with acrylic open paints and matte medium I disrupt the opacity and saturation while emphasizing bold, and vibrant colors. Utilizing color, light sources, and capturing the excitement, and atmosphere of the environments depicted.
