6 The Moonlight Sonata

This painting is part of my "Paint Music" series. Beethoven composed the Moonlight Sonata in 1801 as a dedication to his beloved student, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi—a love he could never fully express in words, only through music. I created this piece in memory of someone deeply special to me, who fought a long battle with Alzheimer's. Like Beethoven's haunting melody, this painting holds both heartbreak and transcendence.
I struggled with this work, creating many layers before I understood what was missing: myself. My early attempts looked like greeting cards—a bright circle against dark blue. Empty. Soulless. Then I realized I had to stop illustrating the moon and start painting the emotion—the weight of loss, the fragments of memory, the light that persists even in darkness.
The deep blues are the depths of grief. The pale creams are glimpses of presence. The yellow accents are moments of joy that linger. This is what the Moonlight Sonata sounds like to my heart.
