Originally from Sherbrooke and now based in Montréal, Luc Martineau is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist who transitioned to a professional artistic career in 2022, following a distinguished career in law. After completing both his law degree and a master’s degree in law from the University of Ottawa, he practiced as a lawyer in Ottawa and Montréal before being appointed as a judge of the Federal Court of Canada in the early 2000s. His legal career spanned more than four decades, from the late 1970s to 2021, during which time his passion for the arts remained a constant presence in his life.
Martineau began exploring oil painting in the 1980s, and in the early 2000s, he shifted to acrylics, marking a decisive turn towards abstraction and experimentation. In 2022, he established his studio at the Complexe du Canal Lachine in Montréal, dedicating himself fully to his artistic practice. His debut solo exhibition, Final Judgment (2022), received a warm response, encouraging him to continue exploring complex themes within his work. Since then, he has participated in several group exhibitions, delving into subjects such as the body, memory, and identity.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I see myself as a seven-year-old poet and illusionist, crafting with lines, shapes, and colours. Caught within this unfamiliar body mirrored back at me, clutching a pencil or brush, my hand moves, trembles, feels, and weeps, guided by the luminous radiance of the soul and the resonating echoes of the universe. Surrendering to the creative mystery, everything blurs into illusions, everything embodies a symbol, everything encapsulates art. In this exploration without an endpoint , I become a free electron seeking to become whole again with its divine essence. Consciousness is the essence of being, I want to cocreate all possibles.
