The eagle did not wait for an easy path.

I followed it through the forests of the Driftless Region, where the land breaks into ridges, wet low places, and thick green cover. The morning air tasted damp and earthy. Mosquitoes found every patch of skin. My boots sank into soft ground near the wetlands, then scraped over roots and stone as I worked my way around the rugged landscape.

Somewhere ahead, the eagle moved through the trees. I caught flashes of white, then brown, then nothing. The forest kept closing around me. Leaves brushed my arms. The smell of wet grass, river mud, and warm bark rose with every step. I could hear water nearby, insects in the shade, and my own breathing as I tried to stay quiet.

The goal was simple, but it felt far away. I wanted to capture the eagle in flight, wings spread, body lifted by power and purpose. Not a still bird. Not a distant shape. I wanted the moment when strength becomes motion.

Then the clearing opened.

The eagle came through low and fast, its white head cutting through the green, its wings raised wide above the blur of trees. For a second, I forgot the mud, the heat, and the mosquitoes. I lifted the camera and trusted my hands.

The shutter clicked as the eagle drove forward through the light.

That was the reward, not just getting the photo, but earning the chance to see it. The wild had made me work, wait, listen, and follow. Then it gave me this, a bald eagle rising through a clearing, carrying the whole forest with it.
