“Going Through the Motions” speaks to the repetitive actions done during labor. The painting depicts a central, well defined woman doing laundry. She is surrounded by more abstract forms and another woman in motion using a sewing machine. The gaze of the main woman is detached, a blank stare that may be recalling a distant memory. She has no need to focus on the task at hand that has become unconscious due to repetition.
The color in this piece, as well as the others, has an subtle monochromatic feel. Red dominates the entire painting and is basically the only color other than black and white. A brick brown color is used to surround the main figure, emphasizing it and making it the main focal point.
