Mixed media on canvas.
30x30"
I started adding linen fabric to some of my work after it was washed and love the loose dangling threads which I have highlighted with ink.
Margriet Hogue is a mixed media artist who spent her formative years in Venezuela and the Netherlands before immigrating to Canada with her parents, initially to the east coast and a few years later out west.
At the age of two her favourite things to play with were socks and her love with textiles continues. She studied textile and design at Old College and weaving at The Banff Centre of the Arts. In 1989 she established her own needlework business that specializes in reproductions of museum samplers from Europe and North America as well as teaching workshops. Her involvement in the arts has extended into painting and she has developed her own style of abstract art.
Margriet’s work is primarily abstract and loosely based on topography and consists of layers of paint and hand made papers which are distressed.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am always fascinated by being out in nature whether it's in the mountains, in the country or by the ocean. The contours of the land, the distressed surfaces and the colours of the different seasons are beautiful and I try to bring these into my art.
When I start a piece I generally don’t have a preconceived idea as to the end result but work intuitively, about the only thing I have made a decision on is the colours to be used and those could change. I build up layers of paper and paint and these get sanded, gouged and scraped into and I’m responding to what shows up from below. This past year I have started adding fabric to my paintings and as I have always been interested in working with textiles in one form or another they seem to be creeping back in
