In the Yukon, a rare phenomenon unfolds each year. Grizzlies linger into December, sometimes braving -30°C to feed on late-running Coho salmon. While most rivers are frozen over, groundwater seeps keep certain creeks flowing, providing vi- tal spawning grounds. As bears wade through the shallows, the wet clumps of their fur freeze solid, giving rise to their name—“Ice Bears.”
