Year painted: 2010. The flow of molten hot lava. As destructive as hot lava is, it also exhibits awesome beauty with its bright colours and awesome energy. The image of beautiful girls with long flowing hair are silhouette within the piece as if they appear and disappear within the active flow of lava, which also signifies the ever changing essence and power of beauty. Painted to the music of Rock and also Smooth Jazz.
Sean Yul Singer was born in Toronto, Canada in 1963 into an artistic family and grew up in Paris, Tokyo, New York, Montreal and Toronto surrounded by painting, music and dance.
Singer performed for several years with Laura Foreman’s Composers and Choreographers Theatre – a cutting edge New York City dance troupe whose activities are well documented in historical dance archives such as The Museum of Modern Art and the Judson Memorial Church.
A late bloomer, Singer has been painting abstract art in Toronto since 1993. Fueled by the myriad of images and experiences from his extensive travels throughout the world, including North America, Europe, North Africa and Asia, he also uses his knowledge of music as creative inspiration. His bold use of colours and unorthodox techniques create a joyful and dynamic vision for his viewers.
Singer's exhibitions and coverage include:
* Gallery representation: Gallery Moos, Toronto, Canada
* Showings in the St. Lawrence Centre for the Performing Arts (Toronto) through Rupert Young at Moos Gallery.
* Group show Art11 (Montreal, Quebec).
* Solo guest artist for MPP David Zimmer’s annual Levee in the Piano Lounge of the Toronto Centre for the Arts in 2007 & North York Civic Centre in 2010.
* His painting “Golden Garden” hung in the office of the Ontario Attorney General's office and in the legislative building at Queen’s Park.
* His painting “Universal Feed” was chosen by Toronto Mayor David Miller as the image set on the official City Hall greeting card in 2004. That piece hung in the Protocol Lounge of the executive offices at City Hall for 8 months.
* Featured in the Etobicoke Guardian newspaper.
* Exhibited at the Cobalt Gallery & Clay Studio, Etobicoke Civic Centre, Nelson Park Creative Centre, L'Arte Art Bar, Gate 403 Art Bar & Gallery and the Cobourg Lions Art Show and at the Cafe260 in Toronto.
* Works presently in the permanent collection of politicians as well as corporate and private collectors, including The Honorable Mr. Justice Dennis Lane, Canadian MPP John Hastings and Manulife Financial.
Singer has been primarily self-taught and continues to explore new techniques which produces unique and dynamic effects.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My desire to paint stems from wanting to communicate with others through emotional and spiritual self-expression and as an avenue for creative and emotional release.
Always in abstract form, my work varies from interpretations of an emotional state to topics related to the cosmos. My creative impulses are most often of a spontaneous nature in which I use vibrant colors, music and the use of self-taught unorthodox techniques to create a visual effect. Music is always an essential complement used when painting as it either accentuates current emotions or guides me towards other creative directions.
I encourage the personal interpretation of my work in any way that affects the viewer. Perhaps we can share a spiritual, intellectual or emotional connection or the viewer can be moved by the effect, intensity and vibrancy of colors and their flow within a piece.
