Advay Mengle

Pastel, conté, flashe, acrylic, and silica on linen.

26x36x1"

A luminous pink form rises from the floor like a veiled body, a shrine, or a temporary memorial. Its scale within the picture is monumental, yet its materials feel unstable: powdery pastel, dragged pigment, and granular silica create a surface that seems to glow, erode, and shed light at once.

Mengle stages the image as an encounter. At right, two thinly drawn figures stand before the radiant mass, their bodies nearly absorbed by the dark violet ground. One appears to hold a phone, introducing a contemporary gesture of spectatorship: witness, documentation, distraction.

Acid yellows and electric pinks push forward against a nocturnal field of purples, blues, and reds, while the scraped, open marks keep the image provisional. Rather than commemorating a fixed event, Monument presents memory as something unstable: radiant, damaged, and still being made.
