NOCTURNE

By Lola Fatunmbi | LOLABSART

Nocturne was inspired by my experience navigating corporate America as a Black woman and the feeling of finally coming home after a long day.

There is a certain exhaustion that comes with constantly being aware of how you present yourself, how you speak, and how others perceive you. You can be confident, accomplished, and successful in your career while still feeling the pressure to adjust parts of yourself to fit into spaces that weren’t necessarily designed with you in mind.

I wanted to capture the moment when all of that falls away. The woman in Nocturne has returned home, taken off her shoes, and settled into a space where she doesn’t have to explain herself or meet anyone’s expectations. She can simply exist.

I deliberately placed her on the floor, surrounded by the comforts of her home. There is something familiar about finding your favorite spot, even when there is a perfectly good chair nearby. Her posture is relaxed, her surroundings are warm, and for the moment, nothing is being asked of her.

Nocturne is about that transition between the person the world expects you to be and the person you get to be when no one is watching. It’s a reflection on ambition, identity, and the importance of having a place where you can truly feel at ease.
