OBAKREON

The African-Greek King

Obakreon draws inspiration from Memnon, the legendary Ethiopian king of ancient Greek mythology, whose beauty, nobility, and presence were celebrated in classical literature.

The name combines the Yoruba word Ọba, meaning king, with Kreon, a Greek name associated with rulership. Together, they form a new identity that connects two cultures with their own rich traditions of kingship.

I was drawn to the history of Africans in the ancient Mediterranean world, particularly their presence in Greek mythology and art. These representations offer a perspective on Black beauty and identity that is often absent from how we encounter classical history today.

Through this portrait, I imagined a contemporary interpretation of an African king within the tradition of classical portraiture. His natural curls, upward gaze, and relaxed expression contrast with the ornate gold frame, bringing together an informal moment and a traditionally regal presentation.

Obakreon is not a portrait of Memnon himself, but an exploration of African identity within a classical world where African figures were already part of the story.
