Shards - Many Moons

Acrylic and oil paint, terracotta shards, copper-wire on stretched canvas.

30x30x1"

This piece is part of a series of paintings through which I am exploring culture and nature and the tension between the two. Shards of an old Venda clay pot, that have been lovingly saved for decades, are stitched into place onto each of the 25 moons. The repetitive composition suggests order but upon closer examination, order is evasive as the moon phases are haphazard and the shards do not regain their vessel form.
