Watercolour on paper.

"Splash Study" is my vibrant and dynamic watercolor artwork that captures the raw power and beauty of ocean waves. Measuring 16"x12", this piece masterfully illustrates waves crashing onto rocks, an exhilarating scene that brings the vitality of the sea to life. I predominantly used various shades of blue and white to effectively convey the swirling motion and texture of the water. My delicate, intricate brushstrokes highlight the frothy white surf, creating a striking contrast with the deep, rich blues of the wave crests.
The composition brims with energy, encapsulating viewers in the ocean's untamed force and natural splendor. The scene's vivid dynamism is not just in the subject but also in my loose and expressive painting style, a testament to my skill in manipulating watercolors to evoke a sense of immediacy and motion. Each element of the artwork, from the finely detailed foam to the bold wave formations, works in harmony to make viewers feel as if they are right there, experiencing the sea's raw, breathtaking power.
I’m Nathan Dixon, a watercolourist & designer from Toronto. I've been drawing/painting since I could hold a pencil/brush, with over twenty years of experience specializing in watercolour.
In 2001 I studied Textile Design at Sheridan College Art and Design School. After a couple of years I realized that it was not the right path for me! In 2004 I attended George Brown College majoring in Fashion Design and graduating in 2006. I currently work as a freelance artist and designer.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My ultimate goal as an artist is to interpret my inspiration in a new and interesting way, be it a wildlife, still life or portrait.
In the last few years I have begun to experiment with painting larger, It allows me the freedom to play and express myself with colour and texture on top of my signature of combining loose wet on wet techniques with more tightly detailed work.
Even though my style and I have evolved over the years, what has remained consistent is my goal of showcasing the beauty in the world around us.
