Acrylic on canvas.
48x36x1.50"
Growing up at the foot of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, Mount Rundle was/is one of my favourite hikes. I was in awe of the riot of colours and variety of flowers in bloom on a Spring hike.
Born and raised in Calgary, Susen spent her childhood between the family farm and the majestic mountains, with summers immersed in the vibrant culture of Europe. These contrasting environments offered endless inspiration, filling the pages of the sketchbooks she carried everywhere. As an only child, Susen cultivated a vivid imagination, channeling her creativity into writing short stories, poetry, music, and sketches.
Susen’s art, primarily acrylic, is celebrated for its whimsical animals and dramatic landscapes, brought to life with vivid skies, bold compositions, and harmonious, contrasting colors. Her work is known for its rich textures and emotional resonance—sometimes playful, sometimes stripped down, yet always reflective of life’s complexity.
Her talent has been featured at The Apik Art Gallery, Poor David’s Galleria, on platforms like Gallea and Only Local, and in Rachel Notley’s Art from the Unknown. A proud member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and a curated member of RAWartists, Susen’s creations grace homes and spaces across North America, Europe, and East Asia.
When she isn’t immersed in her studio, you’ll find Susen hiking with her two large dogs, tending her gardens, or enjoying a lively game of cards with her family.
“I am, first and foremost, a storyteller, and I invite you to join me on this visual journey.”
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Drawing inspiration from everything I see, hear, and experience, I paint the world as I perceive it—through a deeply personal lens rather than objective reality. My work seeks to capture the essence of my subjects, inviting viewers to discover a fresh and unique way of seeing the world.
Rooted in the concepts of Post-Impressionism and Abstract art, my style is an exploration of individuality and connection. Each piece serves as a conduit for viewers to affirm their own core essence. When people engage with my work, they often bring their own imagery and interpretations, shaped by personal experiences. Every brushstroke becomes uniquely meaningful—a conversation between the painting and its viewer.
I delight in crafting subtle yet rich textures, layering vibrant, transparent, and translucent colors, and integrating mixed media to evoke long-forgotten memories and visceral emotions. For me, the act of creation is deeply personal—transforming my subjects into intimate expressions of thought and feeling.
As a self-taught artist, I work free from conventional constraints or rigid standards of correctness. To me, art is about challenging boundaries, stepping beyond comfort zones, embracing vulnerability, and discarding limitations. There is no right or wrong in art—only authenticity and expression.
