I was downtown and decided to sit down on the lawn surrounding the Supreme Court of Canada and sketch in my sketchbook back in August. I used the sketch a few days later to create a large-scale painting. I was immersed in the cold, bold lines of the trees–there was very interesting negative space. The way the trees were laterally connected created a weave that reminded me of the scenes from the Group of Seven. I used no photo reference (historical or other) during the painting process, just awareness and a desire to capture the memory of feeling in nature.
