There is no clean line between one season and the next. Summer doesn't simply end and autumn begin. The change happens gradually, almost imperceptibly at first, as the brightness of one season begins to deepen into the richness of another.

The Turning is about this cyclical nature of change, and the way transformation so often happens through accumulation rather than disappearance. Colour intensifies. Greens darken. Flowers become heavier and more saturated. The exuberance of summer doesn't vanish; it seems to concentrate, becoming richer and deeper before eventually giving way to the starkness of winter.

I find something reassuring in the repetition of this cycle. Nature is constantly moving through periods of emergence, abundance, decline and return, without treating any one of them as the final state. What appears to be an ending is already part of what comes next.

There is a rhythm to that movement that extends far beyond the seasons. We move through our own periods of expansion and contraction, fullness and emptiness, beginning and ending. Nothing stays at the top of the wheel forever, but nothing stays at the bottom either. The turning is the constant.
