From high on the hillside, the view opens toward the distant mountains of Vancouver Island, soft and hazy in the afternoon air. The light is warm and golden, and it settles over everything like a held breath. In the foreground, the afternoon sun wraps the trees in a cloak of light, and the leaves of a maple glow among the green. Tall evergreens rise in layers, some near and cool in the shadow, some pale with light, each one built stroke by stroke from life. I painted it from my terrace in West Vancouver, looking out into the distance. The far trees slip down toward a pale sheet of water lit by the sun, and the blue mountains rest on the horizon, dissolving into the sky. It is the kind of view that asks you to stop and simply look, and to feel the height, the warmth, and the deep calm of a summer afternoon on the west coast.
