Every winter, a small herd of endangered wood bison tends to use the plowed roads to move from one grazing ground to another—right into the path of speeding trucks with collisions killing up to 20% of the herd annually. Once nearly extinct and later reintroduced, they now face mounting losses from modern roads—part of a broader crisis that claims millions of animals across North America each year.
