I was inspired to paint this scene after a visit to Victoriaville, Quebec. I stood in the shaded area to snap the photo; when I uploaded it I saw how intriguing the shadow play was. My intention was to recreate the feeling of being in the shade on a hot summer day--it is possible to still see colours in the shade, but it is almost like an optical illusion. The cyclist adds a splash of colour and momentum to the quiet, small town scene.
