Winter is rarely as quiet as it looks.

Beneath the pale light and frozen surfaces, there is always movement—weather pushing against weather, warmth struggling to break through, and the landscape refusing to surrender completely. "When The Frost Fights Back" grew from that sense of resistance.

The painting became a collision of forces. Icy whites and cool blue-greens sweep across the surface, while deep blacks create moments of weight and shadow. Burgundy, pink, and flashes of yellow push through like unexpected warmth—small rebellions against the cold. Marks overlap, collide, disappear, and re-emerge, creating a surface that feels unsettled and alive.

Living through Canadian winters, I am fascinated by these moments when the seasons seem to argue with one another. Just when you think spring might be gaining ground, winter returns with one more blast of snow and ice.

This painting is about that stubbornness.

The frost isn't finished yet.
