We tend to look at flowers and think about how pretty they are. We admire them, photograph them, put them in vases, but there’s so much more happening beyond what they look like. Plants are living, breathing participants in this whole interconnected system that sustains life. They give us oxygen, we give them carbon dioxide, and there’s this constant exchange happening between us and the living world around us whether we’re paying attention to it or not. That’s what I see when I look at Aura Vitae. I created this image using double exposure and intentional camera movement, and I love the way it makes the flowers almost look like they’re breathing. There’s this feeling of contraction and expansion, of energy moving back and forth. You can still see the vibrance and beauty of the flowers, but you can also see something that feels alive and in motion. To me, that’s what this image is really about. The flower isn’t just something pretty to look at. It’s part of this enormous web of interconnected energy and exchange that we’re part of too.
