Autumn at Furry Creek

This is a study for a larger painting, made on the Sea to Sky at Furry Creek, where the forest meets the edge of Howe Sound. Here the autumn is caught as it truly looked, painted from life in a more realistic hand — the trees gathered close on the point above the water, each in its turning colour. One tree burns bright orange among the deep green firs, a blue spruce stands cool and silver beside it, and a single bush flames brilliant red at their feet. Below, the last golden leaves crowd the slope. Beyond, the water lies still and blue, a wooded point reaches into the calm, and the far mountains rise soft and dark under a quiet, cloud-veiled sky. It is the study from which a larger, more romantic vision — Whispering Forest — would grow.
