A young wolf stands on a frozen lake. In autumn, this lake becomes a gathering place for spawning sockeye salmon. But when winter arrives and the waters freeze, the bodies of spawned-out salmon become locked in the ice. The wolves remain here through the cold season, returning to dig through the frozen surface and feed on the salmon preserved be- neath—a remarkable adaptation to the harsh rhythms of north- ern wilderness.
