Here the garden rises higher than your head. Look up, and the gladioli stand against a clear summer sky — scarlet and flame-orange, their petals open like small banners in the light. Around them the cosmos lean on slender stems, pink and white and deep magenta, nodding wherever the air stirs. Cream dahlias, soft pink ones, and a spire of violet larkspur crowd in among them, and low at the roots a hundred smaller blooms tangle together in a mosaic of colour. Nothing here is arranged; everything simply grows. It is high summer at its most generous — loud with colour, warm with sun, and wholly given over to the joy of things in bloom.
